IMPORTANT FAQs

SOFTBALL

We will make the call on cancellations as soon as possible. You will receive an email or text message (if enabled) from the system anytime a game is changed, canceled, or moved.

If your team needs to forfeit a game for whatever reason, please email or text us within 6 hours before your Monday – Friday game time and 24 hours before your Saturday or Sunday game time. Email is [email protected] & Text # is 703-382-9111 . Failure to let FXA know within the 6 or 24 hour timeline will result in a $100 forfeit fee, and will need to be paid before your next game. If not paid before 12pm of your next game, the game will be forfeited. This will now give you leverage to hold your players accountable for attendance. THESE PENALTIES WILL BE ENFORCED!

Send an email to [email protected] with your team name, your opponent’s team name, and both scores, so we can confirm this information with the referees and then update the scores.  Teams have 2 weeks (14 days) to inform the league of an incorrect score posted to the website / standings. If they find the error after 15 days, the league cannot guarantee the score will be changed.

If you would like to request a game reschedule, send us an email to [email protected] at least 5 business days prior to the scheduled game. Otherwise, we will not be able to pursue a reschedule for you. Please note, your opponent must agree to the reschedule, otherwise the game will be a forfeit.

We strongly suggest cleats, but just require that the studs be plastic or rubber. NO METAL CLEATS!

If both teams playing against each other wear the same color jersey/shirt, the AWAY Team (1st team listed on the schedule) is responsible for changing to a different colored jersey/shirt.  A pinnie can also be used.  FYI, the alternate shirt must also have a permanent # for Soccer & Basketball shirts/jerseys.

There are a few holidays throughout the year where we will not schedule games:

  • Super Bowl Sunday (no games after 5pm)
  • Easter Sunday
  • Mother’s Day
  • Memorial Day Weekend
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day Weekend
  • Thanksgiving Weekend (Thurs-Sun)
  • Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day

Please expect that all other holidays that fall on your league day will have games scheduled, and we will not be able to accommodate bye week or reschedule requests for those days.

CURRENT & UPCOMING SPIKEBALL LEAGUES

Setup:

Ball – 12 inches in circumference
Spikeball set – net tension should be consistent throughout
Court Dimensions (see image above)
Winner of rock, paper, scissors gets to pick side or serve
Opposing players line up across from each other.
Before the ball is served any players not receiving the serve must be 6 feet from the net. The returner can stand at whatever distance they choose.
Once the ball is served players can move anywhere they want.
Possession changes when the ball contacts the net.
Each team has up to 3 hits per possession, but they do not need to use all 3 hits.
When sunlight is a factor, teams should switch sides half way through the match.
When playing on grass, if one team is playing in cleats and the other team is barefoot, paper/rock/scissors is played to determine if both teams need to be barefoot, or if the barefoot team needs to wear shoes. If the barefoot team loses and wants to remain barefoot, they must do so at their own risk.

Scoring:

Rally scoring (points can be won by the serving or receiving team)
Teams will play 3 sets to 21. You must win by two points.
Switch sides after one team reaches 11 points.
Points are scored when:
The ball isn’t hit back into the net within 3 hits
The ball hits the ground
The ball hits the rim (including clips) (Even during a serve–rim shots don’t count as a “let”)
The ball does not bounce off the net in a single bounce. (It must clear the rim in order to be good)
There is an illegal serve or other infraction

Serving:

The receiving team sets their position first. Server stands directly across from the receiving player. Only the designated receiver can field the serve.
The ball must be tossed up from the server’s hand before it is hit. It cannot be hit out of the server’s hand. If the server does not like the toss, they need to let the ball drop to the ground. They will have one more opportunity to toss and serve the ball.
Server’s feet must be behind the service line (at least 6 feet away from the net) when the ball is hit. They can lean over the service line, but their feet may not cross the service line until after the ball is hit.
The server is allowed to take a pivot step or approach steps but is not allowed to move laterally beyond a pivot.
Serves can be as hard or as soft as the server likes, and drop shots are allowed.
Serves must be below the receiver’s raised hand. If the ball can be caught by the receiver, it has to be played. If the ball is too high, the receiver must call “let” before their teammate touches the ball. The serving team has one more try to serve. If the serving team cannot hit a legal serve on the second try, they lose the point. If the receiver does not call “let”, continue play.
The ball must come cleanly off the net on a serve. If the ball takes an unpredictable bounce (commonly known as “pocket”), the receiver must call “let” before their teammate touches the ball. The serving team has one more try to give a clean serve. If the serving team cannot hit a legal serve on the second try, they lose the point. If the receiver does not call “let”, continue play.
If the ball takes an unpredicted bounce, and lands back on the net or the rim, it’s the other teams point and a change of possession.
If the ball contacts the rim at any time, it is a point for the other team and a change of possession.
After a server wins the point, they change positions with their teammate so they are directly across from the other member of the receiving team.
The four players serve in the same sequence throughout the match, changing the server each time a rally is won by the receiving team.

Contacting the Ball:

Hits must alternate between teammates.
The ball must be hit, not be caught, lifted, or thrown. You cannot hit the ball with two hands (this includes putting both hands together while contacting the ball with your hands).
You can use any part of your body to hit the ball and it counts as your hit. (You cannot contact the ball twice in a row regardless of what part of your body it touches)
If the ball hits any part of the ground or rim it is no good. There are only “lets” on the serve. After the serve, if the ball does not hit the rim, play it regardless of how it bounces.
If teams cannot determine if the ball hit the rim, replay the point, no questions asked.
Once the ball hits the net, it must bounce off in a single bounce. It must clear the rim in order to be good.

Infractions:

Defensive players must make an effort to get out of the offensive team’s way. If a member of the defensive team is in the way of a play on the ball, the player being blocked must call “hinder” and replay the point. The offensive team must have a legitimate play on the ball to call “hinder.”
If the defensive team gets hit with the ball, call “hinder” and replay the point. The offensive team must have a legitimate play on the pass to call “hinder.”
If a defensive player attempts to play a ball when it is not their turn, they lose the point.
If a player hits a shot off the net then the ball hits their teammate, they lose the point. If a player hits a shot off the net then the ball hits himself/herself, they lose the point.
If any player makes contact with the Spikeball set that moves the set or affects the trajectory of the ball, they lose the point. If the contact with the Spikeball set does not move the set or affect the trajectory of the ball, play on.

TEAMS

Each team must consist of a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 4 players, 21 years of age or older.  Teams may consist of all males, all females, or co-ed. Teams who have more than 2 players may rotate players between rounds. If a teammate is absent, one substitute can be recruited to play (only during regular session games) or the player may play alone. A team playing with only one player will start each game with a 0-5 score.

COURT LAYOUT

The Bocce court is approximately 60 feet long and 12 feet wide.

EQUIPMENT

FXA provides all the equipment. This consists of 8 Official FXA Bocce balls and 1 pallino (smaller target ball) 4 balls are one color and 4 are a different color.

OFFICIALS

There will be a referee managing game play and questions; however, each game and match will be self-scored and then reported to the referee. Team captains must be cordial and agree on scores.

GAME RULES:

  • League shirts will be provided and are your team’s uniform.  They must be worn during league play.
  • For honors (the team that tosses first), Rock, Paper, Scissors will be played (best 2 out of 3 shoots).
  • To start the game, have a player from the starting team stand behind the foul line (which is 10 feet from the throwing end of the court) and throw the small ball, or “pallino” toward the opposite end of the playing surface.
  • The same person who tossed the Pallino then throws their Bocce ball trying to get it closest to the Pallino without touching it.
  • The next team then throws one ball trying to get closer than the first team. If team two gets closer, then it is Team one’s turn. If Team two’s ball does not come closer, then they continue to throw until they get a ball closer to the Pallino or until they are out of balls. Then Team one throws the remainder of their bocce balls. REMEMBER: You can knock your opponent’s balls away from the Pallino to increase your score.
  • The team with the closest ball gets one point for each of its balls that are closer to the Pallino than the other team’s closest ball.
  • Keep in mind that if the two teams’ closest balls are an equal distance from the pallino, no points are awarded.
  • End the frame after all eight balls have been thrown and appropriate points have been awarded. The scoring team begins the next frame. If no team previously scored, the team that threw the pallino last begins the next frame.

SCORING

When all balls have been thrown, the teams shall proceed to measure the distance of the bocce balls from the pallino. Each team’s ball that is closer to the pallino than the nearest ball of the opposing team, scores 1 point. Games are played to a set point, in this case 15.

FOULS & ZERO POINTS

  • If the thrower crosses the foul line and tosses, they lose that toss, and the ball is removed from the court.
  • If someone tosses out of turn, they lose that toss, and the ball is removed from the court.
  • If a player moves one or more of his team’s balls, it or they are removed from the court and considered dead and play continues.
  • If a player moves one or more of his opponent’s balls, those balls are removed and awarded one point each and play continues. Only one team is awarded points, so only the team fouled against can be awarded points.
  • If a player illegally moves the pallino during the frame, the team fouled against will be awarded as many points as the number of balls that team has already played that frame, and the frame will be ended at the point.

FORFEITS:

Teams forfeiting two nights of play in one season are eligible to be removed from the league with no refund. Teams that forfeit their third night of play will automatically be removed from the league with no refund. Teams are encouraged to send at least one player or contact FXA’s office to inform us you will be forfeiting.

TIEBREAKERS:

  1. Head to head results.
  2. The least amount of forfeits.
  3. The least amount of games lost.
  4. Rock, Paper, Scissors, best 2 out of 3 shoots.

PLAYER WAIVER & RELEASE FORM

Every player must complete the Player Registration Form prior to the first scheduled game of the season.  Any team that has not submitted all their player waivers by that time will have its scheduled games declared a “forfeit” until all waiver forms are received.  If a player fails to submit their online player waiver & release waiver form, all liability and legal issues will be the responsibility of the team captain.  Fairfax Athletics will not be responsible for players that do not submit an online player waiver & release form.

Players may be listed only on one team’s roster per season throughout that league night. For a player to be considered “playoff eligible” (eligible to participate in the playoffs), he/she must be listed on a team’s roster and must have played in a minimum of two regular season games for that team.

FXA CODE OF CONDUCT

  1. Understand, appreciate and abide by the rules of the game.
  2. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials and FXA staff.
  3. Respect your opponent and congratulate them in a courteous manner following each match whether in victory or defeat.
  4. Be responsible for your actions and maintain self-control.
  5. Do not taunt or bait opponents and refrain from using foul or abusive language.

FXA reserves the right to suspend any player at any time for unsportsmanlike conduct, violation of any rules, for failure to pay appropriate dues or for being disruptive, without any refund. Any team wishing to suspend any member for just reasons, must do so on their own, and provide FXA a written reason as to why. Again, no refunds will be issued.  At the discretion of FXA, any member suspended may not in the future be allowed to participate in any further FXA events.

SOCCER

Yes, that is different than being on two rosters. We can’t guarantee that your games won’t conflict, but you can be on a men’s league roster and a co-ed roster on the same night of play.

The team captain must logged into their account, and click on Dashboard. From there, click on Manage/Add Players, then click Print Team Roster in the top right corner.

All basketball & soccer players are required to register for their team and enter their jersey number. To update your number, login to your Dashboard and click “Edit Registration Details” next to the corresponding team you want to update. Then, simply update the “Jersey #” field on that screen.

For playoffs, NO non-rostered players may play. For a regular season match, a team may use up to two female and two male substitute/guest players.

We offer both 8v8 and 11v11 formats for both Men’s league and Co-ed.

For Co-ed 8v8, you need at least 3 females (goalkeeper does count toward that), and you need at least 4 females for 11v11.

To help the League emphasize that it will no longer tolerate dissent of a referee’s calls, the League is instituting a new ZERO TOLERANCE policy. The policy will be clearly posted in the Laws of the Game and FAQs on the League’s website. The new law, which will allow a referee to eject a player who persistently dissents calls without penalizing the overall team, will state:

A. The League endorses a zero tolerance approach to foul, abusive, or degrading language. Foul and abusive language includes, but is not limited to, profanity, racial/gender/religious/ethnic slurs or degrading comments, and harassing or demeaning words, phrases, or gestures. Regardless of whether it is directed at another player, a teammate, the referee, or a spectator, referees will automatically issue a Red Card ejection to the player. The ejected player must immediately leave the field complex. In addition to sitting out the remainder of the match the player was ejected from, the player will be required to sit out two additional matches. Additional match suspensions will be added for such things as continuing to use foul and abusive language, failing to leave the field complex immediately, and other actions which bring the game into disrespect. In the event of expletives used in frustration (missed shot, etc) that is muttered under the player’s breath, the referee is NOT required to Caution the player. Rule of thumb—if the foul language can be heard by spectators on the sideline, it MUST result in a Yellow Card.

B. The League endorses a zero tolerance approach to dissent of a referee’s call. When a player or a substitute on the bench persistently dissents, regardless of whether foul, abusive, or degrading language is used, the referee will eject the player/substitute. When a player on the field is ejected for dissent, the team may replace that player and DOES NOT have to play down a player. When either a player or a substitute on the bench is ejected for dissent, they must immediately leave the field and the surrounding area. The referee will not restart play until the offending player has left, but the clock will continue to run. To avoid the loss of playing time, teams are strongly encouraged to urge the offending player to immediately leave the field complex. In addition to sitting out the remainder of the match for which the player was ejected, the player MUST also sit out the team’s next scheduled match. Additional match suspensions will be added for such things as continuing to use foul and abusive language, failing to leave the field complex immediately, and other actions which bring the game into disrespect.

So to summarize the new policy, the referees now have the power to eject a player without punishing the entire team by having them play short. If a referee ejects a players due to foul, abusive, or degrading language, the team can substitute in another player to replace the ejected player, thus not penalizing the entire team. In the past, referees would take A LOT of verbal abuse from players, because they didn’t want to the team to play short. They now have the power to replace problem players, and remove them from the pitch.

There are a few holidays throughout the year where we will not schedule games:

  • Super Bowl Sunday (no games after 5pm)
  • Easter Sunday
  • Mother’s Day
  • Memorial Day Weekend
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day Weekend
  • Thanksgiving Weekend (Thurs-Sun)
  • Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day

Please expect that all other holidays that fall on your league day will have games scheduled, and we will not be able to accommodate bye week or reschedule requests for those days.
